William Edward Jeffery was born in Hightown, Manchester in July 1878. He lived in Newcastle upon Tyne and by trade was a Printer. He attested as a volunteer on 13th February 1900 for the 1st Newcastle on Tyne Royal Engineer Volunteers. He arrived in South Africa with the unit but was attached to the 12th Field Company.
After his return from South Africa, Jeffrey volunteered for continued service with the Newcastle on Tyne District Company Northumberland Royal Engineer Territorial Force. He received the TFEM in 1909. Bars on QSA confirmed
