John Hicks was born at Shank House in Cramlington, Northumberland. At the time of the 1911 census, he was a Coal Miner and living at 32 Humber Terrace in Hirst, Ashington.
He enlisted in Ashington, joining the Northumberland Fusiliers. To France 1st June 1915, he subsequently served in the Mediterranean with the 2nd battalion and sadly died of wounds on 20th October 1917. He was laid to rest in Sarigol Military Cemetery, Greece.
