Thomas Newbery was born in 1885  in Lyme Regis. In civilian life, he was a Shoeing Smith, a trade he carried on when he joined the Army on the 20th of July 1903. 
 
He arrived in France with the 27th BDE RFA on the 19th of August 1914. In 1916 he was transferred to Egypt, serving there until 1919. 
 
Newbery was discharged at his own request on the 20th of April 1922, after 18 years of service.
